Existing Interstate highways already connect Canada and Mexico.  Does the National I-69 project simply duplicate other existing Interstate highways?

As designated by Congress, the purpose of the National I-69 project is not simply to link two locations on the United States’ border (Laredo, Texas and Port Huron, Michigan).  Rather, the National I-69 project links major commercial and population centers in eight states with one another, as well as with trading partners in Canada and Mexico.  Within Indiana, Congress has specifically directed that this corridor connect Evansville and Indianapolis.  There is no existing Interstate highway which provides this connection.  (Updated 11/14/07)
